The short answer: go early
The usual advice for the bamboo grove is a morning visit, before 09:00. It is a recommendation, not a promise of an empty path. No weekday or hour is reliably quiet, and the busiest seasons bring people from first light.
The path is a free public road of about 400 m, so there is no ticket to time. If you prefer to arrive with a guide, guided Arashiyama walking tours meet at 08:30 in Kyoto, and a ride in an Arashiyama rickshaw starts from 12 minutes. From the JR station Saga-Arashiyama the walk takes 13 minutes, from Randen Arashiyama about 10 and from Hankyu Arashiyama 21.

Early morning
Aim to be on the path before 09:00. Choose your station by walking time, 10 minutes from Randen Arashiyama, 13 from JR Saga-Arashiyama or 21 from Hankyu Arashiyama, and plan the first train accordingly.
Getting there →Check the cameras
A crowd comfort map with five levels and live cameras covers the bamboo grove and Togetsukyō. Use it on the day. One camera image does not predict a whole season.
Tenryū-ji early opening
From 14 to 30 November 2026 the garden opens at 07:30 through the garden reception only. The north gate still opens at 08:30, so this does not give earlier access to the bamboo path.
Tenryū-ji →Our pick: a tour that starts early
The morning bike tour puts you in the bamboo at the quietest time of day.

Guided walks, rickshaw rides, boat trips and day tours, with live prices and availability. Early meeting times suit the morning advice.
Spring: cherry blossom
Kyoto's normal dates, based on 1991 to 2020, are 26 March for the first blossoms and 4 April for full bloom. In 2026 the observations came on 23 March and 30 March. These are values for Kyoto reference trees, not guaranteed dates for Arashiyama. Togetsukyō Bridge draws strong demand in blossom time, so go early and expect people.
Blossom is a reason to visit, not a way to avoid crowds. The days with the best flowers are not automatically the quietest.

Autumn: leaf colour
At Jōjakkō-ji in Sagano the colour begins around the second week of November, peaks from mid to late November and lingers into the first week of December. The normal date for maple colour in Kyoto is 5 December, measured on a reference tree, so the two figures cannot be compared directly.
November is the most popular month for leaves. On the peak weekends of 21, 22, 23, 28 and 29 November 2026, staff on the path before Ōkōchi Sansō direct visitors towards Oku-Saga and Kameyama Park. This is crowd control, not a new ticket rule.

Weather by month
Monthly averages for Kyoto from 1991 to 2020. They are climate figures for the city, not a forecast and not measured inside the grove.

The rainy season in the Kinki region normally runs from about 6 June to 19 July. In 2026 it ran from about 2 June to 9 July. July and August are hot, with highs of 32.0 and 33.7 °C, so favour the morning hours for long walks and for the climb to the monkey park. For most visitors, a morning in April or November balances mild weather with scenery.
Evening: the 2026 light-up
The bamboo light-up runs from 30 September to 8 November 2026, 18:00 to 21:00, with last entry at 20:40. It is an event with its own prices, not free evening access to the path. Tickets cost JPY 1,500 in cash at the gate from 17:50, or JPY 2,000 online with guaranteed entry. Children up to 12 enter free. Heavy weather cancels it.
Do not plan on the path being quiet after 17:00. Nothing guarantees it.
